Who We Are

Virginia New Majority (VNM) is a 501(c)4 organization that organizes and educates Virginians to win pro-people policies.  VNM encourages citizenship, civic participation, and informed voter engagement.

Founded in August 2007, VNM breaks from Virginia's old history of racism and corporate domination.  We build on the best democratic traditions as we work to create a new and modern political system where all of us can participate in the decisions that impact us; where funds are raised from those who can most afford to pay; and where government has a role in supporting the common well-being of all.

We build power by organizing the diverse peoples of the Commonwealth.  Together we make up a new majority- African Americans, immigrants, progressive whites, youth, women, gays and lesbians.

What We Do

Since 2008, Virginia New Majority has engaged over 120,000 Virginians about social issues such as healthcare and immigration.  Over the next 10 years, VNM plans to systematically build and consolidate a progressive majority that: supports inclusive, community-building initiatives to support immigrants in their efforts to become citizens, that fights for healthcare for all, that creates a social safety net that is better than the national average, that promotes unions as the best wealth distribution system, that stops state suport for sprawl in favor of mass transportation and that increases revenue through progressive taxes.  Our strategic plan utilizes a number of tactics and vehicles - census work, redistricting efforts, issue identification, integration and development of leader activists, grassroots fundraising and multilingual communications in order to organize people, money and ideas to build a majority and win power.

AZ: The Struggle Continues! - La Lucha Sigue!

Today Judge Susan Bolton issued a ruling on SB1070, granting a preliminary injunction on sections 2b, 5c, & 6 of the law. Specifically the following sections of the law will be implemented:

Limitations of Enforcement: Preventing cities and agencies from
limiting enforcement of federal, requiring collaboration with federal
authorities, and allowing any resident to sue any agency that adopts a
policy that limits enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Day Laborers: Makes picking up a day laborer or entering a car as a
day laborer in a way that impedes traffic into a crime.

Transport & Harboring: Makes it a crime to transport or harbor
anyone unlawfully in the U.S. and empowers police to impound vehicles
of anyone charged with doing so.

Gang & Immigration: Creating a fund for gang and immigration
intelligence team enforcement.

The following sections have been temporarily stopped:

Reasonable Suspicion: The judge temporarily enjoined that requires
police to verify someone?s documentation status based on reasonable
suspicion.

Papers: The judge temporarily enjoined the section that makes it a
crime to fail to apply for or carry registration papers.

Seeking employment: The judge temporarily enjoined the section that
makes it a crime for undocumented people to solicit, apply for, or
perform any work.

Needless to say, tomorrow will be a worse day for migrant, indigenous, and communities of color in Arizona.  Some are celebrating the decision.  And there is victory in this.  The courts are no doubt impacted by political pressure.  We have been building a movement that packed a punch.  We came together, and we demonstrated our power. That's the victory in this day.

There is a harsh reality in this decision as well.  On July 29th, more harmful laws are piled upon the backs of our community.  A split decision from this judge must not divide our movement, because our community is still facing tremendous repression.  There is no partial solution to denials of our humanity.  We demand full justice for our community.

On July 29th we move forward, and urge our allies across the country to move forward.  La lucha sigue, The Struggle Continues.  We will take to the street to pledge our continued resistance to all of SB1070 and ICE Access programs.

We take to the street to continue to build a movement for another Arizona, one that is determined to win full justice for our communities in Arizona and beyond.

We offer the following messages for solidarity actions tomorrow:

  • There is No Partial Solution to a Human Rights Crisis
  • All of Us Or None, We Will Not Be Divided
  • Full Justice for Our Community
  • Obama: 1070 = 287g
