In 2009, VNM launched the Commonwealth Civic Coalition which seeks to engage and empower African-American communities in the Richmond and Tidewater regions of the state. The Commonwealth Civic Coalition incorporates elements of VNM's integrated voter engagement work while also providing leadership development opportunities for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The project will train minority students on organizing and the utilization of grassroots applications. The Commonwealth Civic Coalition is a project committed to developing a new generation of Black civic leadership. We plan to invest in those individuals who are actively trying to better themselves and their community and train them to be better civic activists.
We plan to make University youth empowerment central to all of our activities. The CCC will train students in conventional organizing tactics, how to build a political organization, how to mobilize voters, and how to use voter specific technology.
